The Anthology of Mythologies

This is an amazing article titled "The Bible: So Misunderstood It's a Sin"
revealing how that book is truly an anthology of mythologies and how Christianity really doesn't follow what Jesus and the others (if of course they existed) decreed. It also makes it far more likely that man did indeed make god in his own image which is what we atheists have concluded.

The Time Has Come

As I wrote earlier I was 10 when I became an atheist. For almost half a century I did not care that there were people in churches, synagogues, mosques, temples etc. However when Obama became president the fundamentalists and dominionists emerged from hiding, determined to take away women's rights to control their bodies and lives. This eventually led me to join the NYCAtheists and create this website.

Now that we are governed by that deplorable Republican president we are seeing misogynists, racists and nazis stepping out and declaring they are not wrong and we should always be governed by straight, white Christian males.

I went into how that anthology of mythologies is used as an excuse for homophobia, misogyny and racism in a previous post. It is also the major reason for nazism as Jews are held responsible for the death of Jesus. Christians have been cruel to Jews for centuries. They slaughtered them during the Crusades and at other times, kicked them out of their countries or forced them to live in ghettos (here is an article on Christian atrocities). Once again the current nazis are trying to ruin synagogues and threaten Jews.

The fundamentalist/dominionist Christians also want to do away with public schools or at least control them. They are in effect traitors and saboteurs of America. Our kids will grow up and have to compete in the world market with people who are taught genuine science. It's not just evolution; they will go after geology as it teaches the world is around 5 billion years old then astronomy as it teaches the universe is 13.8 billion years old then biology as evolution is a major factor. We will become a third rate country as other countries who educate their children surge ahead of us.

I have lost all patience with people who cling to those ancient mythologies in the 21st century; they are no more to be respected than adults who insist on believing in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy. We must put away such childish things and grow up and put an end to the cruelty those mythologies have caused.

In Addition to Yesterday

In addition to yesterday's post I have to add this as another reason that we definitely need to outgrow this adherence to Bronze and Iron age mythologies. I just read Cadillac Cancels Neo-Nazi Ad After Online Outrage. I find it so hard to believe that Nazism still exists as we know about the horrendous cruelty committed by them three-quarters of a century ago. This insanity is rooted in Christianity as some believe contemporary Jews are still guilty of what may have happened two thousand years ago. The Romans crucified Jesus (well they did if he existed at all) but because they wanted this belief system to spread in the Roman empire they made the Romans appear to have been manipulated into doing this by the Jews therefore it was the Jews who were guilty of killing Jesus. I truly find it hard to comprehend that this insanity still exists *sigh*

It is Time to Grow Up

Around the time of my last post members of the Gross Old Party began to attempt to become the 2016 candidate for president. This kept me preoccupied and now depressed as Mr Deplorable, of all people, is becoming our president *sigh*

I truly believe it is time to put away childish things such as the belief in those Bronze and Iron age mythologies which lie at the heart of all the craziness that is happening. The fundies, who are true hypocrites, use parts of that anthology of mythologies to be cruel and nasty to people who are not straight, white Christian males.

For example they use it to dislike gays (I don't think transgenders are even discussed in it). Homosexuality is mentioned a mere half dozen times in that anthology of mythologies and isn't even mentioned in those 10 Commandments they keep trying to force on us. Adultery however is mentioned hundreds of times and there is a commandment against it. If the religious claim they cannot serve homosexuals because it's against their belief system then they must also not serve adulterers especially as it seems this deity is far more concerned with adultery than with homosexuality (and they certainly shouldn't make one president). Adultery is a choice; homosexuality is not.

They also use it to control women. They allude that women should be subservient and do nothing but make babies, especially white women so that white people will not simply become another minority in a few decades. They plan to do away with abortion and birth control to make that happen. Such hypocrisy. IIRC god said nothing about abortion in that anthology of mythologies. In fact if a pregnant woman was attacked and miscarried the attacker was only fined; if she died it was a life for a life. Elsewhere god's priests gave pregnant women accused of adultery something to drink; if she miscarried she was guilty therefore god's priests gave women abortifacients. To claim god is against abortion fundies often refer to one of those 10 commandments that states "thou shalt not kill" but soon after he gave the commandments to Moses he ordered his followers to slaughter whole towns. This makes him a highly immoral, hypocritical deity.

Finally they claim the anthology reveals that blacks are descendants of Ham and cursed and therefore they are inferior and god meant for them to be the servants of white people. Slavery was condoned in both the old and the new testaments. I often thought if this god had been truly a superior being, instead of making a commandment about coveting a neighbor's wife or ass or ... he should have said 5 simple words "thou shalt not enslave others". Think how unique it would have made the Israelis millennia ago and over the centuries it would have spared the lives of millions of people and spared them the horrors and sadism of slavery. It certainly hints that man made god in his own image.

Oh yes one last thing. Over the past few decades Calvinism has crept into various Christian sects. It declares that if god loves someone he will make them wealthy with the implication that if he doesn't, he punishes them by making them poor. This is why fundies tend to love people of the 1% and strive to please them so maybe they can become wealthy and loved by god too when in actuality this is very much against Jesus as he said if you wanted to follow him you had to give up your worldly goods and he cared about the poor and the outcasts and not the upper crust of his era.

We in the beginning of the 21st century and the 3rd millennium and we are over 50 years into the Space Age and it is time to grow up and become mature and decent people who will take responsibility for what is happening to fellow beings and our planet but will that ever happen?

The Next Voice You Hear

The other day I came across a reference to a movie I hadn't seen or thought of since I was a teenager. It was "The Next Voice You Hear" (1950) where god decides to speak to the contemporary world. It occurred to me that if god actually exists why doesn't he/she/it reveal him/her/itself to us like in that movie and show us who really got the story straight and is worshiping god correctly. Think how much pain and suffering this would put an end to...and we atheists would have to acknowledge that god exists.

The only reasons I could think of was:
1) He/she/it is a sadist who likes to watch us suffer as we hurt and kill each other fighting over which god is the true one and who is worshiping he/she/it in the right manner. If true such a deity is not deserving of worship.

2) Honoring my father, who loved  Erich von Däniken's "Chariots of the Gods", it could be that those ancient gods were aliens who know if they reveal themselves we would now comprehend the old gods were advanced aliens and not the deities they pretended to be.

3) The god/s the believers, who cling to these old mythologies, are fighting over all around the world doesn't exist because if he/she/it is omnipotent and omniscient as claimed there is nothing that can be stopping him/her/it from showing us his/her/its divine existence. Why then do so many still adhere to this nonsense?

On the Road...

I've been thinking about my journey towards atheism and realized that Walt Disney played an important role. When I was a little girl his movies of fairy tales like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella enchanted me so I began to read all sorts of books on fairy tales which led me to mythologies which are basically ancient fairy tales. That, plus my interest in ancient history in school, made me aware that all over the world there were fantastic stories featuring a deity or deities each with their own creation myths and many with their own versions of Adam and Eve.

I remember sitting in Sunday school with the teacher explaining how this was the one true god while the others were false gods. I wondered why, if this was the true god of the entire world, he didn't he show up in China and India and the Americas and Australia and Africa and reveal how he was the one true god and dictating his rules so that the whole world would be eating kosher. If he was too lazy at least he should've popped up in Assyria, Babylonia and Rome explaining how he was the true god and they were to leave his chosen people alone but did he do something so helpful - no. The only thing I could think of was that either he didn't exist or Baal and Jupiter kept him from going to their domains. To this day it seems so obvious to me that he was just one of many made up deities - how in the world can others not see this? Oh the stupidity *sigh*

An Easter Infographic

Came across this fascinating infographic (you can click on it to enlarge it) around Eastertime. It shows the discrepancies in the story of Jesus and his death and resurrection. How fundies can claim there are no contradictions in the Bible I'll never understand.
